HEALTH
& SAFETY AT WORK
The
relationship between a healthy workforce and company success
is being increasingly recognised by Improving staff health
and fitness, reducing stress levels and regular health assessments.
This can combat long-term absenteeism through the early detection
of potential illness.
Management
of Health and Safety At Work Regulations 1999 regulation 6
states;
**“Every
employer shall ensure that his employees are provided with
such health surveillance as is appropriate having regard to
the risks to their health and safety which are identified
by the assessments.”
Every year
organisations lose millions of pounds in lost time and revenue
due to staff illness. On average 6.8 working days per employee
were lost to absence in the UK year of 2004 with a total of
168 million days lost thoughout the UK. The
main causes for sickness absence are stress, musculo-skeletal
injuries (such as back ache and neck pain) and minor illness
such as colds and flu. As a result of ill health and work
absence, companies paid an overall cost of £12.2 billion
in 2004 to cover the salaries of absent individuals and the
resulting overtime and temporary cover calculating to a figure
of £495 per employee.
